Most Blindness Disease Are Curable?
Yes, most of the world threatening eye diseases that cause blindness is curable now. With early detection and treatment, we can either preserve the remaining good vision or slow down the progression of the disease. Here the major problem is people unaware of what the disease is, its consequences and how to manage them. According to a recently conducted survey, almost 63% of Indians are not even aware that diabetes has an effect on the eye apart from other body parts. As many as 92 % of diabetics undergone a retinal examination only after their vision get affected.
Uncorrected Refractive Error
Refractive error is a most common eye condition and occurs when the eye cannot clearly focus the image on the retina resulting in a blurred image. When these refractive errors as left uncorrected, they can cause severe visual impairment and blindness. The uncorrected refractive error is the second leading cause of visual impairment and blindness globally1)Resnikoff S, Pascolini D, Mariotti SP, Pokharel GP. Global magnitude of visual impairment caused by uncorrected refractive errors in 2004. Bull World Health Organ 2008; 86: 63–70. PubMed. Refractive errors can be easily treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses and laser surgery...
As we age, our lens becomes gradually opaque resulting in light rays blocked off from the retina. This condition is called cataract. Normally it doesn’t affect the vision but the more it grows dense, the more it affects the vision. Most age-related cataracts grow slowly over a period of years. While there is presently no medical cure for cataract, cataract surgery is extremely effective for the vast majority of patients to the extent that it is one of the most successful operations available today…
A glaucoma is a group of condition that can damage the optic nerve and cause complete irreversible blindness if untreated early. Here the fluid accumulates in the front of the eye and increases the pressure inside and damages the optic nerve completely. Glaucoma usually symptomless in its initial stage, this makes difficulty in early diagnosis. Early detection and treatment can delay further damage and retain a vision. Glaucoma evaluation is important for the people with age above 60 yrs, family history of glaucoma and those with increased IOP.
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a common condition with the people with diabetes, affects the tiny blood vessels in the retina. It is a leading cause of blindness in the world. Diabetic Macular Oedema (DME) is the consequence of the disease. About half of the people with diabetic retinopathy will develop DME. In Diabetic Macular Oedema, Fluid (oedema) accumulates in the region of the macula. The macular region of the retina is responsible for the central vision. At first, people may notice general blur or spots floating on vision. Eventually, the disease progresses and cause complete vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment during the initial stages can reduce the risk of blindness with 95%.
AMD – Age-Related Macular Degeneration – is a common eye disease like cataract and glaucoma. It is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people aged 50 or more. In susceptible people, their macula, a delicate region in the retina, gets gradually damaged. In people with AMD, the central vision is blurred and over the time it develops as a blank spot known as central scotoma...
